Which would you rather be trapped in a dorm room with...

A guy playing the guitar who doesn't know any chords

OR

A system playing loud, pulsating bass

Details:

  • Today's question is courtesy of Kimmy Acquilano out of Raleigh, NC.
  • The sound of the guitar is basically what it sounds like when you just pick one up and strum it. Also he is trying to sing, badly.
  • You know what loud, pulsating bass is like, especially when the eccentrics buy huge sub-woofers. Imagine that's how it is and there's no way to stop it (there usually isn't.)

Kimmy Acquilano:
"She is always dangerous."

RESULTS:

guy playing the guitar: 7
loud, pulsating bass: 2

Comments: I think I'll just ask the guy to stop playing guitar. If he doesn't I could always Hendrix-ify his guitar. Yummmmm, the lovely sound of silence.

Comments: Being that I live with both Kyle Brown ( guitar player ) and Chris Priesig ( bass system freak )... I have alot of experience in both areas :) and uh... since you can't turn off the bass.. i have to go with the guitar player. I mean at least you can sing along with him but with the bass you just get vibrations and kinda makes you have to go to the bathroom sometimes. so mmm.. yeah.. definitely the guitar player. fin....

Comments: If it's a dorm room then there should be plenty of dirty laundry to hide under. It might not be thick enough to stop some loud, pounding bass, but it should do the trick for normal-volume guitar. I guess this turns into another WWYRBTW: dirty, smelly laundry or loud, pounding bass? I say laundry.

Comments: For two years, I lived next to these 4 guys in Lightsey (the same guys, mind you--we moved, but they moved right next door to us!) who played their sound system with the bass pumping ALL THE TIME. I lost count of how many times I asked them to turn it down, or when I was too tired, simply banged on the wall. If you've ever lived with me, you'd know why I chose the option I did. Also, I'm trying to learn to play the guitar, so I AM that guy. :)

Comments: Well, considering that Kevin and I had suitemates who had the loud, pulsating bass thing going our entire freshman year, I am somewhat amazed by my choice. But the guy who doesn't know any guitar chords will bring up bitter memories of how I made a weak attempt at learning guitar right before college. (It went nowhere because I had a very busy senior year of high school, and I soon had to give up on the idea. Of course, all of those people I knew at Clemson like Darren Lord who made guitar-playing look easy really help to form the bitter part of the memory.) :>)

Anywhoo...my bed from freshman year was on the wall next to the bass system. And my only real complaint (besides having to hear it at 3 a.m. on a Sunday morning) was that I could ONLY hear the bass, that the bass had an extremely boring and repeating pattern, and that the guys only had these really long, 15-minute-plus songs. Maybe it would be better if I'm actually in the same room.

Besides, I now own a small subwoofer, so it would somehow be wrong of me to publically condem loud, pulsating bass...not really, but I had to add something else to make me feel better about my choice.

Comments: [The bass] is one of the most annoying things ever! Especially if you are trying to sleep or do homework.

Comments: because, there is usually no rhythm to [the bass], it's just long notes. such as: daaaaaaaaaaaaaaa daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa daaaaaaaaaaaaa and that's it, and not only do you ahve to hear it but you have to feel it too!!

Name: Heather
Who: (Super)Dave's girlfriend
Choice:
bass
Comments: I figure after a while I could ignore the sound or maybe find some earplugs, but the guy with the guitar would vary his playing/singing and that I couldn't ignore

Comments: People, it's a trick question. The guy is John Cliver, and he is on a roll with a comedic song.
