Question for March 6 - April 29, 2000 (wow):

Which would you rather be trapped in a movie theatre with...

People who won't stop laughing at things that aren't funny

OR

People who have seen the movie before whispering to each other what will happen next?

Details:

  • Don't lie to me, kids; let your frustrations out. I'm sure that there have been times when you paid to see a movie, and then found yourself in the company of people who apparently think they're in their own home.
  • Well, while you're trying to watch that movie, would you rather have people who laugh VERY LOUDLY at parts that aren't funny (such as suspenseful scenes, scenes with cruel death, emotional scenes, or when key plot points are being revealed) thus ruining the entire emotional impact of the movie, OR...
  • Would you rather hear people who have seen the movie before "whispering" to each other (loudly enough for their neighbor 5 places down to hear) about what will happen next, thus again ruining the entire impact of the movie but in a different way?

RESULTS:

"HA HA HA! They're poisoning a girl's food!": 7
"Pssst, I've seen this before and...": 2

Name: Archbishop Cleophus T. Jenkins
Choice: Loud Laughers
Comments: Well, they're both just darned annoying don't ya think? But seriously, laughing is just a tad bit louder than the wispering. I can't really find anything funny to say about this so I guess I'll leave it at that. Sorry for not saying anything intersesting, mea culpa.

Name: Allison
Choice: Loud Laughers
Comments: Laughter is contagious. I have a weak immune system. I like to laugh. You do the math. :) Seriously, though, having people constantly laughing would shed a whole new light on movies like the Shawshank Redemption. ("Honestly, how often do you look at a man's shoes?")

Name: Bonnie
Choice: Loud Laughers
Comments: This would be especially good if the movie was scary. It makes the mood a bit lighter. People talking in movies is extremely annoying. The worst thing is when they try to talk to you. So I pick laughing, because it isn't too annoying.

Name: David Bowen
Choice: Loud Laughers

Name: jean jean jean
Choice: Whimsical Whisperers
Comments: any movie i could see in a theatre round and about south carolina would be an american movie, thus having minimal to no plot, i don't think those folks could ruin anything for me. i don't go to movies to enjoy a thick, suspenseful plot anyway. i go to be still for more than 10 minutes at a time. my life is the suspenseful, rich and frothy plot and sometimes there are people sitting nearby who whisper about what will happen to me next...i rather enjoy it..but i digress.

Name: jean's sister
Choice: Loud Laughers
Comments: because i do it

Name: Jess
Choice: Whimsical Whisperers
Comments: Ok, it is really annoying to have people laugh at non-funny parts. Remember when we went to see "Sixth Sense"? And there was that person who constantly laughed at the serious parts? There was no way you could get away from that annoying laugh. At least if people are being rude by just wispering, you can move to another seat. And even if you could not get away from them, at least they are easier to tune out than our annoying laughing prick. Do you sense some bitterness?? No, really, I am not bitter, but I just wish that people would be considerate at times. Oh, and if you ever see me doing the thing that I am complaining about, please tell me!!! Ok, I think that is all. Is that what you were looking for Kev, for someone to vent? Well, here you go.

Name: Laura Muirhead, from Scotland (Jen's friend)
Choice: Loud Laughers
Comments: I have to say I'd rather be stuck in the movies with someone who kept laughing at the funny bits because it would be better than the story discussed the whole way through, especially if the scene was a cruel death it would make it seem less real.

Name: Kevin
Choice: Loud Laughers
Comments: Because they're so loud, if you yell out for them to SHUT UP you'll have the support of the entire theatre - NOT SO with the whisperers.
