Question for April 30 - August 21, 1999:

Which would you rather be trapped on the beach with...

A Hungry Shark and a Hungry Lion

OR

A Maniacal Scuba Diver and an Evil Robot?

Details:

  • OK here is how it works. This is an area of beach blocked off, 200 yards by 200 yards square, half of it land and half of it water. You cannot get out of this area.

  • In one situation there is a hungry lion on the land and a hungry shark in the water - in the other, an evil robot on the land and a maniacal scuba diver in the water.

  • The scuba diver cannot cross over into the land. He is armed with two knives, and will try to drown you.

  • The robot is tough and competent (not like Konky on Pee-Wee's Playhouse.) It can run, and has all kinds of evil robotic gadgets (like buzz saws that come out of its arm) but cannot cross into the water (for obvious reasons.)

  • The shark and the lion are both out for blood.

  • In both cases, you are armed with a baseball bat.

  • This is my attempt at a summer theme (get it? beach? summer?) Since it is going to be up awhile, I have incorporated many elements - land and sea, some animals, and a maniacal person (a throwback to earlier questions). I put the evil robot because I think there has been a real deficiency of evil robots on my page thus far.

  • If this looks thrown together, it's because it is.

RESULTS:

Scuba Diver and Robot: 8 - 10
Shark and Lion: 1

Name: Iowa
Choice: Diver and robot
Comments: If I can lure the robot close enough to the water I can use the baseball bat to knock him in and thus electricute him leaving me free roam of the beach.

Name: Noremac
Choice: Shark and lion
Comments: I can just lull the lion to sleep with my beautiful singing voice and then while he is asleep I can feed him to the shark thus taking care of the Lion and the Shark's hunger...Have a great summer

Name: Melissa Ferger
Choice:
Diver and robot
Comments:
b/c I could lure the robot into the water and short circuit it, or just pound it to pieces w/the baseball bat

Name: Josh Shiflet & David Mahaffey
Choice: Diver and robot
Comments: According to David, it would be easier to damage the robot with the bat than a lion. I agree. Just smash the brain or whatever and that baby's gone. Then throw him in the water to electricute the diver.

Name: Barbara and Joy (Yankees)
Choice: Diver and robot
Comments: for obvious reasons

Name: Jason Eudy
Choice: Diver and robot
Comments: The robot is more susceptible to baseball bat damage than the lion. You don't really stand a chance against either of the things in the water, so those didn't factor into the decision.

Name: Mim
Choice: Diver and robot
Comments: Because, You could break the robot by hitting it really hard. And plus, i think a lion is scarier. :) When i think of Evil Robots, i think of that baddy on inspector gadget and stuff....and i know that the goody always wins. Plus sharks are scaaary! But a maniacal scuba diver just sounds funny!

Name: jean the bean
Choice: Diver and robot
Comments: I feel more confident about using my finely tuned psychotherapuetic skills with a psychotic scuba diver and an intelligent robot, than I would using them with Jaws and Simba. Why? Well, I think I could talk the scuba diver out of the water and out of the knives, but that shark's teeth are in there for good! No talking is gonna make him let 'em go! And, I feel pretty good about tricking a robot into the water (which would disable his dangerous aparatus and quick-thinking computer chips), but have you ever tried to get a lion to go swimming? He'd rather eat me than get his mane wet, I bet! Gosh, Kev, this is just what I needed for a quiet evening after a long day at work. Thanks again!

Name: Lauren :)
Choice: Diver and robot
Comments: God can work wonders with the brain of a scuba diver
